Where to Eat With a View in SLO County

There is a moment, usually at a table on a bluff somewhere between Avila and Pismo, when a visiting client goes quiet and then says some version of "people just live here?" Yes. And the answer to "where should we eat tonight" on the Central Coast is often less about the kitchen than about what is outside the window.
We have organized these restaurants with a view in SLO County by the kind of view, because that is really the choice you are making. Ocean, harbor, or vineyard. Sunset, boats, or hills. Each comes with its own towns, and each of those towns has its own real estate story.
VENTANA GRILL · MARISOL AT THE CLIFFS · LIDO AT DOLPHIN BAY
Ocean views: the Pismo and Shell Beach bluffs
The bluffs from Shell Beach to Pismo are the county's premier dinner-with-sunset real estate, for restaurants and for homes.
Ventana Grill in Pismo Beach sits on the bluff above the sand with wide, unobstructed ocean views. It is the reservation people make for a birthday.
Marisol at The Cliffs in Shell Beach has a bluff-top patio, and the dining room is built for the sunset.
Lido at Dolphin Bay Resort is the refined option on the Shell Beach bluffs, quieter and more polished, with the same ocean in front of it.

MOONSTONE BEACH · RAGGED POINT
Ocean views: Cambria and the North Coast
Farther north, the views trade sand for rocky coastline and pines.
Moonstone Beach Bar & Grill in Cambria sits across from the Moonstone Beach boardwalk, with the ocean through the window and a walk along the bluffs before or after.
Ragged Point Inn, at the southern edge of Big Sur, is technically in SLO County and has one of the most dramatic dining views on the entire California coast. It is a drive, and it is worth it.

Harbor views: Morro Bay
Morro Bay's Embarcadero is lined with restaurants facing the harbor, Morro Rock, and the sandspit. The view here is working boats, otters, and the Rock changing color at dusk.
Windows on the Water is upstairs, white-tablecloth, and has the widest harbor view on the strip.
Dutchman's Seafood House and Tognazzini's Dockside are both directly on the water at the casual end, where the fish is local and the boats are close.
Giovanni's Fish Market is takeout, but eating fish and chips on the seawall with the Rock in front of you is as good a view-dinner as any.

OLDE PORT INN · MERSEA'S · CUSTOM HOUSE
Harbor views: Avila Beach and Port San Luis
Olde Port Inn at the end of the Harford Pier is literally above the water, with the harbor, the fishing boats, and the Avila hills around you.
Mersea's on the same pier is the casual deck option.
Custom House on the Avila promenade looks straight out over the beach and pier.
Avila's protected, south-facing cove means it is often sunny when Pismo and Morro Bay are fogged in, which is one of the reasons we think of it as the county's best-kept microclimate secret. Our post on living in Avila Beach year-round, not just on vacation explains the trade-offs.
SYCAMORE MINERAL SPRINGS
Canyon and garden views: Avila Valley
Gardens of Avila at Sycamore Mineral Springs does not face the ocean. It faces a wooded canyon and a garden, and it is one of the most peaceful dinner settings in the county. Different view, same effect.
HIGHWAY 227 · ORCUTT ROAD · OLD EDNA
Vineyard views: Edna Valley
Edna Valley's tasting rooms are the closest vineyard views to the city of San Luis Obispo, and several offer food alongside wine on their patios.
Tasting rooms along Highway 227 and Orcutt Road, including Tolosa, Edna Valley Vineyard, and the historic Old Edna townsite area, look out over the vines toward the Santa Lucia foothills. Food offerings vary and are often seasonal, so check ahead.
The valley's evening light, with the hills turning gold and the fog sitting on the coast to the west, is hard to beat.

HIGHWAY 46 WEST · ADELAIDA
Vineyard views: Paso Robles
Paso's west side hills and the Adelaida district hold the county's most dramatic vineyard views, and several wineries have built restaurants or serious food programs to match.
Niner Wine Estates on Highway 46 West has an on-site restaurant with vineyard views and a farm-driven menu.
The Daou and Justin estates in the Adelaida hills are known for their hilltop settings; food offerings vary, and reservations are typically required.
Downtown Paso does not have vineyard views, but the rooftop and patio restaurants around the City Park catch the North County sunset.

CERRO SAN LUIS · BISHOP PEAK
City views: downtown San Luis Obispo
High Bar, the rooftop at Hotel San Luis Obispo, is the city's rooftop-view option, looking out toward Cerro San Luis and Bishop Peak. It is a drinks-and-small-plates spot more than a dinner destination, but the view of the Morros at sunset is a SLO-specific pleasure.

Choosing your view
If you are trying to decide which view you want to live near, not just dine near, here is how we frame it:
Ocean bluffs (Pismo, Shell Beach, Cambria): the most dramatic, the most fog-prone, the most sought-after.
Harbor (Morro Bay, Avila): active, ever-changing, and paired with real working towns.
Vineyards (Edna Valley, Paso): warm, golden, and quieter, with more land and more sun.
Hills and peaks (SLO): the city option, with the Morros as a backdrop.
The view you keep going back to for dinner is a good clue about the view you want from your kitchen.
