The 5 Best Places to Eat in the Five Cities

We spend a lot of days in the Five Cities. It is one of the most active parts of the San Luis Obispo County market, and a showing schedule that starts in Shell Beach and ends in Oceano leaves plenty of time to eat. Over the years we have settled on the best places to eat in the Five Cities, one favorite in each town, and since the Five Cities are really five distinct personalities packed into a few miles of coastline, we thought one pick per town was the honest way to do it.

Here they are, north to south, with a word on what each place says about the town around it.

SHELL BEACH · PISMO BEACH

Shell Beach and Pismo Beach: Giuseppe's Cucina Rustica

Giuseppe's started in Pismo Beach long before it opened a downtown SLO location, and the Pismo original on Price Street is still the one longtime residents mean when they say the name. Southern Italian food, wood-fired pizza, a lively room, and a wine list heavy on local labels. It is a few blocks from the pier and a world away from the tourist chowder crowd.

What it says about Pismo: there is a real town here underneath the visitor economy, with a dining scene that residents built for themselves. We make that case at length in our guide to living in Pismo Beach.

Also in Pismo and Shell Beach: Cracked Crab for a bucket of shellfish dumped on butcher paper, Ventana Grill for a sunset dinner on the bluff, and Splash Cafe for the bread bowl you will be asked about by every visitor.

ARROYO GRANDE

Arroyo Grande: Ember

Ember sits on the edge of the Village of Arroyo Grande and has become the restaurant people across the county drive to. Wood-fired everything, a menu that changes with the farms around it, and a wait that tells you how good it is. This is the Five Cities' most serious kitchen, and it is in a town that a lot of people still think of as quiet farm country.

GROVER BEACH

Grover Beach: Fin's Seafood

At the very end of Grand Avenue, where the road meets the beach, Fin's is a casual seafood restaurant with a patio, a view of the dunes, and a local crowd that has been coming since before Grover Beach got any attention. Fish and chips, chowder, tacos, and beer while the sun goes down over the Pacific. It is unpretentious in a way that fits the town exactly.

What it says about Grover Beach: the value here is real, and so is the beach access. Grover has the same ocean as its neighbors at a friendlier price, a point we make in living in Grover Beach.

Also in Grover Beach: the Grand Avenue corridor has quietly filled in with taquerias, a couple of breweries, and small family restaurants that are worth wandering.

OCEANO

Oceano: Old Juan's Cantina

Old Juan's has been the Mexican restaurant in Oceano for a very long time, close to the highway and the entrance to the dunes. It is big, loud, family-friendly, and generous, with margaritas that have ended more than one beach day early. Locals from every one of the Five Cities meet here because it sits in the middle of everything and nobody has to dress up.

THE WILDCARD · BREAKFAST & COFFEE

The wildcard: the Five Cities' breakfast and coffee scene

We promised five restaurants, but the Five Cities really eat best in the morning. Penny's All American Cafe in Pismo, Zorro's Cafe & Cantina in Shell Beach, and Cafe Andreini in Arroyo Grande are where the towns actually gather, and any of them would earn a slot on a different day. WHAT THE FOOD SCENE TELLS YOU

A few patterns worth knowing

If you are new to the area, or thinking about becoming new to it, here is what the food scene tells you about the Five Cities:

1. Each town has its own center. The Village in Arroyo Grande, Price Street and the pier in Pismo, Grand Avenue in Grover, the highway corridor in Oceano. The towns run together on a map and feel separate on the ground.

2. Tourists cluster; locals spread out. The pier and the Pismo downtown blocks get the visitors. The best local meals are a few blocks inland or a town over.

3. Summer changes the math. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the beachfront restaurants fill with visitors and residents retreat to Arroyo Grande and Grover. We talk about that rhythm in tourist season vs local season in SLO County.

4. The farms are close. Strawberries, avocados, and greens from the fields just inland show up on menus within a day of being picked. Ember is the clearest example, but it is true up and down the list.
