The 5 Best Places to Eat in SLO, According to Working Professionals

Updated: 2 days ago
Picking places to eat in SLO for a working lunch comes with a specific set of requirements. It needs to be close to downtown, because that is where the offices, the title companies, and the county building are. It needs to be quick when you have an hour and gracious when you have a client. And it needs to be the kind of place where you will run into three people you know, because in SLO, that is how business gets done.
We have eaten our way through a lot of lunches with lenders, escrow officers, contractors, and buyers. These are the five places we keep coming back to, with a note on when each one fits.

DOWNTOWN SAN LUIS OBISPO
The five
1. Big Sky Cafe: the reliable client lunch
Big Sky has been on Broad Street for decades and it is the closest thing downtown SLO has to a default. The menu is Central Coast comfort with a lot of local produce, the room is big enough that you can usually get a table without a reservation at lunch, and it is quiet enough to actually talk. When we are meeting a relocating buyer for the first time and want them to understand what the city eats like, this is where we bring them.
Best for: first meetings, out-of-town clients, a lunch that needs to run an hour and a half without anyone feeling rushed.
2. High Street Deli: the fast solo lunch
When the day is packed with showings across the county, we need something we can eat in the car between Arroyo Grande and Templeton. High Street Deli, in a small building on the south side of town, makes big sandwiches with a devoted local following, and the line moves. The parking is tight and the crowd is a mix of construction crews, Cal Poly students, and people in office clothes who know what they are doing.
Best for: grab-and-go days, a sandwich to bring to a listing appointment, ordering ahead.
3. Novo: the lunch with a view of the creek
Novo sits on Higuera Street with a back patio that steps down to San Luis Obispo Creek, and that patio is the reason it earns a place on this list. The menu leans globally, the wine list is deep in local labels, and the setting does the work of impressing a client so you do not have to. On a sunny weekday it is one of the nicest places to sit in the whole county, and it is a good reminder of why people relocate here in the first place.
Best for: celebrating a closing, hosting a client who is on the fence about moving, a long lunch with a colleague.

4. Luna Red: Mission Plaza and small plates
Luna Red faces Mission Plaza, which means you eat with the mission in view and the plaza's foot traffic going by. The format is shareable plates, which suits a group that cannot agree on one thing, and the patio is one of the best outdoor rooms downtown. We tend to use it for larger lunches, the kind with a couple of agents, a lender, and a client all at one table.
Best for: groups, a late lunch that turns into an early drink, showing someone the heart of downtown.
5. Sidecar: the after-work stop
Not every work meal is lunch. When a deal closes at four in the afternoon and the buyers want to mark it, Sidecar on Broad Street is where we head. The cocktails are serious, the food is better than a bar's needs to be, and the crowd after five is a cross-section of downtown's professional class. It is loud in a good way.
Best for: post-closing drinks, decompressing after a hard negotiation, meeting someone who works late.
A FEW MORE
Honorable mentions
We would be lying if we said we only ate at five places. A few more that make the rotation:
Ox + Anchor at Hotel San Luis Obispo, for a proper steak dinner with a client.
Mint + Craft on Monterey Street, for a bright, fast, healthy lunch when the week has been heavy.
The Granada Hotel & Bistro, for a low-lit dinner that feels like a treat.
Firestone Grill, because sometimes a tri-tip sandwich is the right answer, even if the line says otherwise.
THE LUNCH HOUR
What working professionals actually look for
Here is the pattern behind our list, in case you are new to town and building your own:
Parking or walkability. Downtown SLO parking is manageable but not free of frustration. The best work restaurants are either near a garage or an easy walk from the offices.
Noise level. Some of the best food in town is in rooms too loud for a conversation about escrow timelines. We choose the room as much as the menu.
Speed on request. A place that can move fast when you tell them you have forty minutes is worth its weight.
Local ownership. The restaurants that anchor the professional community here are almost all locally owned. That is who you will see at the next table, and that is part of why it works.
Half the referrals we have ever received started with a conversation at a lunch table downtown. In a county this size, where you eat is part of how you work.

MOVING FOR A JOB
If you are relocating for work
This list doubles as a quick orientation to downtown SLO's rhythm. Professionals here eat early, favor patios, and treat lunch as a networking tool. If that sounds appealing, our guide to downtown SLO living explains what it is like to live within walking distance of all of it, and our post on remote work on the Central Coast covers the coworking scene for people who need a desk between meals.
For the other perspectives, see what college students and longtime locals put on their lists. The overlap is smaller than you would guess.
Your next step
If you are house-hunting in SLO and want to see the city the way people who work here see it, ask us to schedule your showings around a downtown lunch. It is a small thing, but it tells you a lot about whether this is your town. You can start by browsing homes for sale in San Luis Obispo and letting us know which neighborhoods you want to walk after the meal.
