Craft Beer on the Central Coast: Breweries Worth the Trip

Ask someone what they drink on the Central Coast and they will probably say wine. Ask a local what they drink on a Tuesday, and the answer is more often a pint. San Luis Obispo County has one of the strongest small-town beer scenes in California, anchored by a brewery that became a national name and surrounded by a couple dozen Central Coast breweries and taprooms that stayed proudly local.
We are not beer experts, but we spend a lot of time in these towns, and taprooms are where a surprising number of our client conversations happen. Here is the tour we would give a friend.
FIRESTONE WALKER · BARRELHOUSE BREWING CO.
Paso Robles and Templeton: the North County anchor
Firestone Walker Brewing Company on the south side of Paso Robles is the reason many people know Central Coast beer at all. It is a large, polished operation with a taproom restaurant and a visitor experience that rivals the wineries down the road. It is also, importantly, a major local employer and a fixture of the community. Even if you have had the beer everywhere else, the taproom is worth a visit.
Just south in Templeton, BarrelHouse Brewing Co. is the other North County institution, built around a large outdoor beer garden with a waterfall, live music, and a family-and-dogs atmosphere on weekends. It feels more like a park than a bar, and that is why locals bring out-of-town guests.
Paso also has smaller producers tucked into industrial spaces and around downtown. Silva Brewing is one of them, a small, brewer-owned operation with a loyal following. And the Tin City district, better known for wine, has taprooms and a cidery mixed in with the wineries, which makes for an easy afternoon of wandering.

SUNKEN GARDENS · EL CAMINO REAL
Atascadero
Atascadero has quietly become a beer town. Its downtown, around the Sunken Gardens and El Camino Real, now has several taprooms and a beer garden or two that draw families on weekend afternoons.
Wild Fields Brewhouse is a brewery and restaurant that anchors the downtown scene.
Tent City Beer Company is a smaller taproom with a following among locals.
Ancient Owl Beer Garden is the bottle-shop-and-taps option with an outdoor space.

SLO BREW · CENTRAL COAST BREWING · LIBERTINE
San Luis Obispo
The city of SLO has more taprooms per capita than you would expect, and they range from college-crowd venues to serious small-batch producers.
SLO Brew is the long-running name. The Rock, its brewery and venue on the south side of town near the airport, hosts concerts and has a large outdoor space; the downtown presence keeps its name front and center.
Central Coast Brewing has been making beer in SLO for decades and has a taproom that regulars treat as a living room.
Libertine Brewing Company is known for wild ales and sours. Its roots are in Morro Bay, with a large downtown SLO location that has become a destination.
Bang the Drum Brewery is a small, mellow taproom on the south side of town with a neighborhood feel.
Liquid Gravity and There Does Not Exist are the newer-generation breweries, both in the industrial area south of downtown, focused on hazy IPAs, lagers, and experimentation. They are where the beer-curious crowd goes.
Oak & Otter Brewing is a family-friendly taproom that fits the neighborhood it sits in.

THE EMBARCADERO · CAYUCOS · CAMBRIA · LOS OSOS
Morro Bay and the coast
Morro Bay is where Libertine started, and the town retains a beer-friendly vibe along the Embarcadero. Cayucos, Cambria, and Los Osos are smaller, and their beer scenes are mostly bars and restaurants with good local taps rather than breweries, though small taprooms come and go. The coast is a place to drink beer after a surf session, not to tour breweries.
MANROCK BREWING · PISMO · ARROYO GRANDE VILLAGE
The Five Cities
Grover Beach has built a small brewery cluster of its own, in keeping with its reputation as the practical, unpretentious corner of the Five Cities.
ManRock Brewing Company in Grover Beach is the neighborhood brewery, with a taproom that locals and dog-walkers treat as a regular stop.
Pismo and Arroyo Grande have taprooms and beer-forward restaurants scattered through their commercial areas, with the Arroyo Grande Village offering a couple of casual options.
Grover Beach's ability to support its own breweries is one of the reasons we keep telling buyers it is the Five Cities' most underrated address.
TAPROOMS ARE A SIGNAL
Why the beer scene matters to a home search
We include this list on a real estate blog for a reason. Taprooms are a signal. A town that can support a locally owned brewery has a resident population that goes out on weeknights, a downtown or commercial district with life after dark, and usually a younger demographic mixing with the established one. Paso, Atascadero, SLO, and Grover Beach all check those boxes, and all four have neighborhoods we recommend for exactly those reasons.

A suggested brewery weekend
If you are visiting the Central Coast to house hunt and want to build in some beer:
Friday evening: downtown SLO, with a stop at one of the south-side taprooms and dinner after.
Saturday afternoon: BarrelHouse in Templeton for the beer garden, then Firestone Walker in Paso for the flagship.
Sunday: a slow one. Grover Beach or Morro Bay, a pint near the water, and a walk on the sand.
Wine country brought people here. The breweries are where they became locals.
