Best Tacos on the Central Coast

You just spent the morning touring homes in San Luis Obispo County, you skipped breakfast, and the question in the car is not about square footage. It is "where do we get tacos?" We get asked this more than almost anything, and we take it seriously, because where locals go for the best tacos on the Central Coast says a lot about a town.
Taco culture on the Central Coast is real, unpretentious, and tied closely to the agricultural life of the county. The best spots tend to be small, family-run, and located near where people actually work: along Grand Avenue in Grover Beach, on the south end of Broad Street in SLO, in the neighborhoods of Paso Robles, and in Nipomo and Oceano where the farming community lives. This is our working list, organized by where you are likely to be standing when hunger hits.

Why tacos tell you something about a neighborhood
When we walk a client through a town for the first time, we pay attention to the everyday businesses. A good taqueria within a short drive means a neighborhood with a real, year-round population, not just a vacation crowd. It usually means a lunchtime workforce nearby, and it often means a stretch of small businesses that have been there for a long time.
That is why this list overlaps so much with the parts of SLO County we consider the strongest long-term neighborhoods. If you are comparing towns, our guide to the Five Cities, town by town pairs well with this one.
TAQUERIA SANTA CRUZ · BROAD STREET
San Luis Obispo
The city of SLO has a mix of college-crowd taco shops and the more traditional taquerias that locals rely on.
Taqueria Santa Cruz is the one we bring up first. There is more than one location in the area, and both draw a loyal following for straightforward, generously filled tacos with a proper salsa bar. It is a lunch-counter experience, not a date night, and that is the point.
The south end of town, along Broad Street and toward the airport, has a cluster of small Mexican markets with taco counters inside. These are the kind of places where the tortillas are made in-house and the menu is short. If you see a line of work trucks at noon, that is your sign.
Downtown has the newer, more polished taco and mezcal spots, which are fun for an evening out but a different experience entirely. Both have their place.

GRAND AVENUE · OCEANO
The Five Cities: Grover Beach, Arroyo Grande, Oceano
This is, in our opinion, the taco heart of the county. Grand Avenue in Grover Beach and the neighborhoods of Oceano have a density of taquerias and taco trucks that the rest of SLO County simply does not match.
Grover Beach's Grand Avenue corridor has several small taquerias that have been serving the same families for years. The al pastor and carnitas options here tend to be excellent, and the salsa is usually made that morning.
Oceano is where you find the taco trucks and the tiny storefronts near the tracks. This is the most authentic, least polished taco experience in the county, and it is where many locals from Arroyo Grande and Pismo quietly drive to.
Arroyo Grande's Village is more about sit-down dining, but the Grand Avenue side of AG toward Grover has a few reliable options too.

TACO TEMPLE · CAYUCOS · LOS OSOS
Morro Bay and the coast
Taco Temple in Morro Bay is the coastal exception to the "small and simple" rule. The portions are enormous, the fish and seafood tacos are the draw, and the place has a following that stretches well beyond the county. Expect to wait at peak times and expect to leave with leftovers.
Cayucos and Los Osos each have a taco option or two in their small commercial strips. In Los Osos, look along Los Osos Valley Road; in Cayucos, the main drag.
A fish taco on the coast is a different animal than an al pastor taco in Oceano, and we think you should have both in the same week.
EAST SIDE PASO · EL CAMINO REAL · TEMPLETON
North County: Paso Robles, Atascadero, Templeton
Paso Robles gets talked about for wine, but it is also a working agricultural town with a large year-round community, and the taquerias reflect that.
The neighborhoods east of the river in Paso and along the main commercial streets have several long-standing taquerias and Mexican markets. Ask a vineyard crew where they eat and you will get the right answer.
Atascadero has a handful of casual, family-run spots along El Camino Real that regulars swear by.
Templeton is smaller, but the Main Street area has a couple of options that fit the town's low-key character.

TEFFT STREET · NIPOMO MESA
Nipomo and the South County
Nipomo is often overlooked by visitors, and that is a mistake for anyone serious about tacos. The town has a strong agricultural community, and the taquerias and markets along Tefft Street and around the older part of town are some of the best in San Luis Obispo County. If you are looking at homes on the Nipomo Mesa or near Monarch Dunes, this is a legitimate perk.
We have closed more than one deal over a plate of tacos. It is where the honest conversations happen.
SHORT MENU · BUSY SALSA BAR
Our rules for finding good tacos anywhere in SLO County
Look for a short menu. The places with forty items rarely do any of them well.
Check the salsa bar. Fresh, varied, and busy is the goal.
Follow the work trucks at lunch and the families at dinner.
Ask for the tortillas to be made fresh if the sign says they are. It matters.
Try the same taco at two places in the same town. That is how you learn what "good" means locally.
