Best Family Restaurants in SLO County

Families moving to San Luis Obispo County ask us about schools first, neighborhoods second, and, usually about twenty minutes into the first tour, "where do people take their kids to eat?" It is a fair question and a good one. A town's casual restaurants tell you whether it has a real family population or just a weekend crowd.
We have both spent years touring towns with families in the back seat, and these are the family restaurants in SLO County we point them to. The bar is simple: kids are welcome, the food is worth the trip for the adults, and the atmosphere forgives noise.

What "family restaurant" means here
On the Central Coast, family dining is mostly casual, counter-service or relaxed table service, and often outdoors. Patios matter, because a squirmy toddler is a lot easier on a patio, and our weather makes them usable most of the year. Tri-tip, pizza, burgers, tacos, and seafood baskets are the staples. Very few places have a formal "kids menu" culture; instead, portions are big enough to share.
Two things to know:
Many of the best spots do not take reservations. Go early, especially on weekends.
The county's family dining scene is spread out. Each town has a few anchors rather than one central district.
TRI-TIP · PIZZA · DELI SANDWICHES
San Luis Obispo
Firestone Grill on Higuera Street is the tri-tip sandwich institution, and the patio is loud enough that a crying kid is just part of the background. Expect a line at peak hours; it moves.
Woodstock's Pizza is the college-town pizza place that families adopted decades ago. It is casual, fast, and nobody minds a table of eight.
High Street Deli is a lunch option with sandwiches big enough to split between two kids.
Frank's Famous Hot Dogs near campus is an old-school breakfast-and-burgers counter that kids love and grandparents remember.
The Thursday night farmers market downtown is not a restaurant, but it functions like the county's biggest family dinner every week: barbecue from the street grills, kettle corn, and live music. Our local's guide to the Thursday night farmers market covers how to do it with kids.

CHOWDER · ITALIAN · BURGERS AND SHAKES
The Five Cities: Pismo, Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach, Oceano
The Five Cities have the most family-friendly restaurant culture in the county, in our opinion, because they have the most families.
Splash Cafe in Pismo is the clam chowder bread bowl place, and it is chaotic in the best way for kids.
Rosa's Italian Restaurant in Pismo is the family Italian standby with generous plates.
Cool Cat Cafe in Pismo does burgers and shakes in a diner setting that kids gravitate to.
Doc Burnstein's Ice Cream Lab in the Arroyo Grande Village is the dessert stop after any of the above, and the Village itself is a nice evening stroll with children.
Sylvester's Burgers in Oceano is a walk-up burger stand that families from all over the south county drive to.
F. McLintocks in Shell Beach is the cowboy steakhouse where the servers pour water from three feet up and the kids think it is the best trick in the world. It is the closest thing to a special-occasion family restaurant on the coast.

THE EMBARCADERO · FISH AND CHIPS
Morro Bay, Los Osos, and Cayucos
Giovanni's Fish Market in Morro Bay has a takeout window for fish and chips that you eat on the Embarcadero while watching the otters. That is a family dinner.
Taco Temple in Morro Bay serves portions that a family of four can share across two orders.
Sylvester's Burgers has a Los Osos location as well, and it is the town's family default.
Sea Chest in Cayucos is more of a date-night place, but older kids who like oysters and cioppino will remember it.
SUNKEN GARDENS · TEMPLETON MAIN STREET · DOWNTOWN PASO
North County: Atascadero, Templeton, Paso Robles
North County's family dining has grown quickly alongside the population.
Sylvester's Burgers has an Atascadero location too, and it fits the town.
Atascadero's downtown around the Sunken Gardens has several casual spots, and the lawn gives kids room to run before and after dinner.
Templeton's Main Street has family-run cafes and a barbecue tradition that fits the town's ranch character.
Downtown Paso Robles has become quite polished, but the City Park is the family anchor: pick up food from one of the casual places around the square and eat on the grass. Firestone Walker's taproom restaurant on the south end of Paso is also a family-friendly stop, despite the name.

The unofficial family dinner spots
Some of the best family meals in SLO County are not restaurants at all:
Farmers markets. Nearly every town has one, and the prepared-food vendors make it a dinner event. See our every-day-of-the-week farmers market guide.
Avila Valley Barn. A farm stand with a sweet shop, animals to visit, and picnic tables. Kids do not want to leave.
Beach picnics. Takeout from Giovanni's or Splash, eaten on the sand, is a Central Coast tradition.
Winery lawns. Several Paso and Edna Valley wineries welcome families on weekend afternoons with food trucks and open space.
The best family restaurant on the Central Coast might be a picnic table with fish and chips and a view of Morro Rock.
How we use this list with relocating families
When we tour with a family, we schedule lunch in the town they are most curious about, at one of the places above. It sounds like a small thing, but watching how a town handles a family at noon on a Saturday tells you a lot: who else is there, how the staff reacts to kids, whether the parking lot is full of locals or rental cars.
