Twenty years ago, Paso Robles was a ranch town with a wine problem, in the best sense. The vineyards kept multiplying, the tasting rooms followed, and eventually the places to eat in Paso Robles caught up. Today the blocks around Downtown City Park hold one of the most concentrated small-town dining scenes in California, and people from San Luis Obispo and the coast drive over the Cuesta Grade for dinner without thinking twice.

Fish Gaucho

Fish Gaucho brought an upscale Mexican and seafood energy to downtown Paso and immediately became the loud, happy place to end a day of tasting. The bar is deep, the patio is busy, and the food is good enough to justify the crowd. On a Saturday night it feels like the whole wine region has decided to meet here.

The Hatch Rotisserie & Bar

The Hatch is the neighborhood spot that also happens to be excellent. Rotisserie chicken, Southern-leaning comfort food, a well-made cocktail, and a room that welcomes a family at six and a bar crowd at nine. Locals go here when they do not want to think about it, which is the highest praise a restaurant can get in a town with this many options.
