Golf Courses in SLO County

You play, or you're married to someone who does, and the question is whether the Central Coast has enough golf to keep you happy. It does. This isn't a golf destination the way the desert is, but the golf courses in SLO County have more variety than most people expect, from an oceanfront layout to hillside wine-country courses, and many of them are public. Here is how we'd describe the options to a friend, plus where golfers tend to buy.
AVILA BEACH GOLF RESORT · MORRO BAY GOLF COURSE
The coastal courses
Avila Beach Golf Resort. The one everyone photographs. It sits in the valley behind Avila Beach with the back nine running along the creek toward the ocean and the front nine climbing into the hills.
It's public, it's walkable from the beach, and it's the course visiting friends want to play. Life in Avila Beach year-round is a small-town affair, but this course keeps it on the map.
Morro Bay Golf Course. A county-run course on the hill above Morro Bay State Park, with eucalyptus, hills, and views of the Rock and the estuary from several holes. Locals call it the poor man's Pebble Beach, which is unfair to a course that is genuinely good and reasonable to play. Expect wind and fog in summer afternoons.
Sea Pines Golf Resort in Los Osos. A short nine-hole course near the back bay. Good for a quick round, beginners, and kids.
Pismo State Beach Golf Course. A nine-hole executive course in Grover Beach, flat and fast to play, right by the dunes.
DAIRY CREEK · LAGUNA LAKE · SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTRY CLUB
The San Luis Obispo courses
Dairy Creek Golf Course. The county's course out on Highway 1 between SLO and Morro Bay, next to El Chorro Regional Park. Hilly, quiet, and often uncrowded on weekdays.
Laguna Lake Golf Course. A short city-run executive course on the west side of SLO. This is where a lot of locals learned, where a lot of people sneak in nine after work, and one of the reasons the Laguna Lake neighborhood works so well for retirees and young families alike.
San Luis Obispo Country Club. The private option in town, located out in the Edna Valley area south of the city. If you're relocating from a club community and want that experience, this is the closest equivalent in the county, and homes around it are some of the most sought-after in the Edna Valley area.
CYPRESS RIDGE · BLACKLAKE · MONARCH DUNES
The Five Cities and Nipomo courses
This is where golf-course living is really concentrated in SLO County.
Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande and Blacklake Golf Resort in Nipomo are both public courses wrapped by residential communities. Cypress Ridge is a Peter Jacobsen design on rolling ground on the Nipomo Mesa side of Arroyo Grande; Blacklake is an older, more relaxed 27-hole layout surrounded by a mix of single-family homes and townhomes. Monarch Dunes Golf Club in Nipomo is the newest of the group, with a links-style championship course and a separate par-3 course, all inside the Monarch Dunes and Trilogy community. It's the closest thing the county has to resort-style living, and it draws a lot of buyers from Southern California who want the amenities without the density. HUNTER RANCH · PASO ROBLES GOLF CLUB · CHALK MOUNTAIN
North County: wine-country golf
Hunter Ranch Golf Course in Paso Robles is the standout. Oaks, hills, and a routing that feels like it belongs to the land, on the east side of town along Highway 46 East. Public, and a common stop on a Paso weekend.
Paso Robles Golf Club is the in-town course, flatter and friendlier, with a long history and a loyal membership.
Chalk Mountain Golf Course in Atascadero is a county course in the hills off Highway 41, with more elevation change than you'd expect. It's the local's course in Atascadero and genuinely pretty in spring.
Summer heat is the thing to plan around up here: morning tee times from June through September, and glorious golf the rest of the year.
WHERE YOU SIT ON THE HOLE · HOA TERMS
What golf-course living actually means here
Buyers picture the fairway view and stop there. A few things we point out on every course-adjacent showing:
Where you sit on the hole matters more than the view. Homes along a landing zone get balls; homes along a tee box get chatter; homes behind a green get the quietest hours. Walk the hole before you fall for the house.
HOAs vary a lot. Some communities bundle a social membership; most don't. Golf privileges and HOA dues are separate questions, and we help you ask both. Our HOA primer for SLO County walks through what to request.
Wind and fog are part of the coastal courses. Cypress Ridge, Blacklake, and Monarch Dunes are all on or near the Nipomo Mesa, which gets afternoon wind. Avila and Morro Bay get fog. Play the course at the time of day you'd actually play it before you buy next to it.
Course ownership changes. Courses are businesses. A community built around one has a stake in that business staying healthy, which is a fair question to ask about any golf community before you buy.
Buy the neighborhood first and the fairway second. A great course next to a house you don't love is still a house you don't love.

If you're coming to the Central Coast to look at homes, book a tee time at whichever course is nearest the towns you're considering. It tells you a lot about the pace of the place, and the people you'll meet on the course are exactly the neighbors you'd have. When you've narrowed it to a town or two, search current homes for sale and we'll flag which ones actually sit on or near a course rather than just claiming "golf views."
